Argos Downlink

How will Users benefit from Argos Downlink?

Argos downlink enables you to:

Send commands to your platforms.
The downlink gives users the possibility of sending short messages (up to 128 bits) to their platforms once they are deployed. These messages are called "downlink messages" and "uplink messages" are those sent by platforms to the satellites.

Manage transmissions, increase platform lifetimes
The Argos downlink allows for the Argos operator to send to all platforms system information such as: satellite constellation (including those without downlink), orbit parameters, and UTC time. By equipping platforms with software that can predict the hour and length of the satellite pass, this system information can be used to enable rendezvous with the satellite(s) and minimize transmission times. Transmission rates can also be optimized for energy savings.

Send more data
Argos downlink increases the data throughput of your platform by using the Interactive Data Collection Service. This new data collection service consists of quality controlling the content of messages received at the satellite (helped by a checksum). The satellite acknowledges, to the platform, reception of each message received correctly.

Conserving compatibility with current transmitters
The Argos two-way instrument, as well as all future two-way instruments, is completely compatible with transmitters currently in use. In order to benefit from two-way capabilities, a platform must be equipped with a PMT (Platform Messaging Transceiver).

How will Users access the new Argos downlink capabilities?

Users can access Argos downlink capabilities via the web interface or through the Department of User Services.

By using the web interface, users can:

  • create, modify, or delete downlink commands recognized by the PMTs
  • define how and when to send commands to the PMTs
  • check if messages are received by the PMTs.

Downlink messages and all associated transmission modes are called "requests".
All user "requests" are stored at the DMMC (Downlink Message Management Center) located in Toulouse, France. The DMMC mission is to:

  • Verify if the messages are compatible with the system
  • Manage the downlink message delivery according to user requests and the system space allocation
  • Generate parameters (including downlink messages) and upload them to the satellite
  • Verify the progress of requests entered into system and inform users of status
  • Manage the software on-board Argos two-way.
